How this calculation works

The Bradford Factor scores absence with B = S² × D, where S is the number of separate absence spells in a rolling 12 months and D is the total days lost. Squaring the number of spells is deliberate: it weights frequent short absences far more heavily than one long, planned absence, because unplanned frequency is what disrupts a team's cover and scheduling.

Trigger points are set by each employer's policy, not by statute — the 50 / 125 / 400 bands used here are common defaults, not a legal standard. Whatever thresholds you use, the Equality Act 2010 still applies: disability- and pregnancy-related absence must be treated with care, and reasonable adjustments to the trigger points may be required before any formal action.
