How this calculation works

Once leave is protected under Regulation 13 (long-term sickness, maternity or other family leave), the deadline to use it is fixed by law: within 18 months of the end of the leave year it accrued in, not 18 months from when it was earned. Getting the leave-year end date right matters, since it's the anchor the whole deadline is measured from.

Contractual carryover under an employer's own policy can set a shorter deadline — often the end of Q1 of the following leave year — but any policy deadline still has to respect the statutory 18-month floor for protected leave.
