Mid-Year Starter Holiday Calculator

Based on the default pattern below, a typical entitlement is 14 days. Adjust the inputs for your exact figure.

6 months

14 days

28 days × (6 active months ÷ 12) = 14 days

Audit note

In the first leave year, employers may round part-days up. Leavers must be paid in lieu of accrued-but-untaken statutory leave; over-taken leave can only be recovered if the contract expressly allows it.

How this calculation works

Joining or leaving part-way through the leave year? Entitlement is pro-rated by the number of months you're actually employed. Enter your active months for the adjusted allowance.

28 days × (6 active months ÷ 12) = 14 days

Frequently asked questions

How is holiday pro-rated for a mid-year starter?
Multiply the full annual allowance by the fraction of the leave year you'll be employed. Start with six months left and you get half — 14 days of a 28-day allowance.
Is it worked out in months or days?
Months is the common shortcut, but strictly it's based on the proportion of the leave year remaining. For an exact figure some employers pro-rate by the number of days from your start date to the year end.
Can my employer round my first-year holiday?
They can round up, and statute lets them round part-days up to the nearest half or full day in your first year. They can't round down below your true pro-rata entitlement.
