Following the Employment Rights Act 2025 reforms that took effect on 6 April 2026, statutory maternity leave (52 weeks), paternity leave (2 weeks), adoption leave (52 weeks) and parental bereavement leave (2 weeks, within a 56-week window) are all day-one rights — there's no minimum length of service required to take the leave itself, though pay entitlement can still depend on continuous service.
Shared Parental Leave lets eligible parents split up to 50 weeks between them (the 52-week maternity entitlement minus the mother's 2 compulsory post-birth weeks), in up to three separate booking notices each. None of these entitlements are pro-rated by hours or days worked — they're flat statutory weeks, the same for full-time and part-time employees alike.
